Outwitting The Devil

A Halloween inspired short story based on the Devil’s Bridge myth.

1117

Enfys couldn’t believe this. How bloody rude. It was so typical—apart from that one interesting day in her life—things tended to go wrong for her.

“Why am I here?” In hell.

“You died.” The Devil answered with a smug grin. She hadn’t changed much since the day she’d built Enfys a bridge forty-two years ago. Enfys’ initial surprise that the Devil was a woman had disappeared quickly. When the bridge was built overnight, the shock on the Devil’s face when Enfys sent her dog, Glas, across the bridge first had kept Enfys warm in the cold Welsh winter nights since then. Smug satisfaction went a long way when she missed Glas. She’d never been able to get another dog.

“I expected to be in heaven. I lived a simple life and helped the monks when they needed.”

“You don’t belong in heaven. It’s for dullards and do-gooders. It’s for the people who’d rather judge others than do anything useful.”

“Excuse me?”

“Clever old ladies who trick the Devil belong here with me.”

Enfys sighed. “Damn it. If I’d known that I’d end up here anyway, I would’ve walked over the bloody bridge that day.”

“But where is the fun in that?” The Devil’s grin was starting to piss her right off.

“Can I at least see Glas?”

“Who?” Although the Devil’s expression communicated that she already knew who Glas was and why Enfys might want to see her dog after so long.

“My dog. You had better have looked after her.” Enfys would rather have sacrificed the cow than Glas to the Devil that day. Just another impossible choice the world had thrown at her. And now it didn’t matter anyway.

“Glas is well. You can see her on one condition.”

Enfys could play the same game. “Is this a negotiation?”

“No. Last time I negotiated with you, it didn’t go well.”

She couldn’t quite hold back the swell of pride that puffed out her chest. “The bridge you built is very sturdy. Impressive.”

“Thank you.”

“I would like to see my dog. What is your condition?”

“Share with me your deepest desire.”

Enfys scoffed. “I told you, I’ve lived a simple life. What could I possibly desire?”

“The same things all humans desire. Food and Shelter, Safety, Love, Respect, and Dreams.”

Enfys cackled. “What is that nonsense? What do you desire?”

“A crafty old woman to warm my bed. It’s lonely in hell and I’ve been waiting a long time for you.”

“Am I to feel sympathy for you?” Enfys wanted to know what the Devil was actually asking.

“Sympathy is unnecessary.” The Devil’s eyes glowed bright red. “Any other questions?”

Enfys had plenty of questions. “The monks would be surprised to see you.”

“Why is that?”

“They assume you are a man.”

The Devil snorted and little tendrils of smoke twirled out of her nostrils. “I am the Devil. People see me in the form they choose.”

Enfys frowned at that; did that mean that the Devil was a woman because she wanted that?

“I see.” She didn’t. She was merely an old woman from a small village in the backwaters of Deheubarth.
